Drug information for statins
Crestor is a generic prescription medication that contains the same active ingredient as a brand-name drug called rosuvastatin.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- AstraZeneca will pay $100 million to settle a lawsuit filed by drug giant AstraZeneca in Connecticut over allegations that it illegally marketed and promoted its blockbuster cholesterol drug Crestor as a way to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The case, filed Thursday in Connecticut's U. S. District Court, has become one of the most complex matters in the world. Crestor is a cholesterol-lowering medication, which is used to lower cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease, and it is currently under investigation by the U. Food and Drug Administration and the U. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations.
In December, the company settled a class-action lawsuit with Connecticut seeking to recover up to $1.3 billion. That settlement was announced Thursday by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who represents AstraZeneca. He said that the $100 million settlement will "ensure the continued public confidence in AstraZeneca's ability to maintain its commitment to the future of our health care industry."
The $100 million settlement, which was part of an agreement AstraZeneca signed with the state of New Jersey on Tuesday, includes AstraZeneca's agreement with Connecticut to pay the remaining $100 million, which is still $2.5 billion in excess.
This settlement is part of a multi-year effort to help the federal government take actions that would be vital to ensuring that consumers and consumers' health is better served by pharmaceutical products. The U. Food and Drug Administration has also made its commitment to the federal government to provide more access to drugs and services for people with health conditions.
The lawsuit was filed by the company, AstraZeneca, in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and it is a part of a multi-state, multidistrict litigation (MDL) against the company, AstraZeneca, that has resulted in a total of $1.3 billion in costs, and millions of dollars of damages, including $1.3 billion in settlements. The settlement is part of a multi-state MDL that AstraZeneca was ordered to pay out of pocket to the Connecticut attorney general.
The company agreed to a settlement in January 2011 that would be subject to future lawsuits. AstraZeneca had previously announced the settlement in January 2011.
But in July 2011, the federal government filed a suit against the Connecticut Attorney General, who announced a settlement in September 2011. The Connecticut attorneys general also said they will share in any future costs that they may have incurred, and they are also expected to file a lawsuit against the company on behalf of the Connecticut children who were born with heart disease.
The company is also suing AstraZeneca for over $100 million in costs.
The company, which has a $1.3 billion settlement with Connecticut, did not immediately return calls for comment. It is also notifying all of the companies that it has been making settlements and that the Connecticut case will be closed.
The suit was filed in Delaware state court in December 2011.
The company has not responded to requests for comment.
